Some essential tips to help you get work done remotely in these uncertain times:
As some of you may have heard, a major security vulnerability came to light last week. It affects all platforms and all operating systems. This is the best source of information I found on it, so far: https://spectreattack.com.
Security patches will slowly be released over the coming weeks. These patches completely change how an operating system and the processor communicates. Some estimates say there is a potential to negatively affect performance by up to 30% or more. We don’t yet know what effects they’ll have on 3rd party applications.
Please do not dismiss this or put it on the back burner. Now is the time to analyze backups and backup strategies as there is a high likelihood of needing them. If you do not have your documents and other data backed up, do so now. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy – buy an external drive on Amazon and copy your data to it.
We’re still waiting on vendors to release the necessary updates.
In the mean time be extremely cautious of what email attachments you open and what websites you visit. Look 2-3 times at a link before clicking it. Often times these hacks jeopardize systems via ads on Google, Facebook and other social media and news sites.
Please cascade this through your organization so that everyone can be aware and take the necessary precautions at home. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. We’ll be in touch as more news comes out. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re available via phone(803.955.7737), email or Twitter.

“We are humbled to once again have the opportunity to support Lighthouse for Life. Human trafficking is on the rise all over the Midlands region and across the state. We believe that every man woman and child deserves to be loved, treated fairly with respect and dignity. Lighthouse for Life is doing tremendous work to bring hope to seemingly hopeless situations by providing training to first responders and will soon be rehabilitating victims. They are incredibly close to having their shelter open and we are extremely grateful that we get to be a part of this event. We are grateful for our clients who allow us to help make this race a possibility.”– Zoltan Borbely, Founder

That is the phrase that comes to mind as we sit here and analyze the events that unfolded at the end of last week. In case you didn’t hear, there was a significant DDoS attack on major DNS provider Dyn. In plain English, someone tried to set the Internet’s phone book on fire. This cyber-attack took down or negatively affected large parts of the Internet all over the world.
That’s a big deal in our ever increasingly connected world and it was all done by exploiting vulnerabilities in IoT(Internet of Things) devices, which is a fancy way of referring to the quickly growing list of gadgets getting connected to the Internet. Manufacturers are rushing to implement these connected strategies for all of their devices with little to no regard to security or the ramifications of flooding the market with unsecured and often times unnecessary gadgets.
Be extremely cautious of any connected device you bring into your home or business, especially ones from little known manufacturers or if the device is inexpensive. We all love cheap gadgets but the old adage that says “You get what you pay for” very much rings true in this category as well.
If this trend continues on the current path, the outages will get much worse and have far bigger consequences. We aren’t far away from large scale hacks of our place of business, our cars and our homes. We must demand better.
